A Multinational Program for Mentoring Novice Christian English Language Teachers

When novice teachers adapt to new cultures while simultaneously learning to teach, they often encounter a host of cultural, methodological, and spiritual challenges. These challenges can be addressed through mentoring. Drawing from 20 years of experience in 15 countries, this presentation describes the characteristics of an effective field-based mentoring program.
Dr. Alan Seaman (Ph.D. University of Virginia) serves as professor of TESOL & Intercultural Studies and as the TESOL program director in the Wheaton College Graduate School. He teaches courses in applied linguistics and second language education and has presented workshops in over 25 countries.
Jolene Dykstra serves as Director of Training and Professional Development for Pinnacle Teaching Solutions, an agency with teachers in over 15 countries. She has an MA in TESOL from Azusa Pacific University and has extensive teaching experience in China, Korea, and Saipan.
