Promoting Student Development of (ICC) through online journal in a college-level ESL Advanced Class
(virtual) Session 1 on Friday, March 8, from 2:15-2:45 PM (PT)
In fall 2023, I began using online journals in my ESL 104 Advanced Academic Vocabulary class a way to encourage student development of intercultural communicative competence (ICC). In their responses to the journal prompts, students demonstrated elements of ICC development through reflections and comparisons on their home and American culture.
Geoff Hoffmann has over 10 years experience teaching English in the U.S. and in China, and currently teaches English as a Second Language and Mandarin at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. His research interest is in the area of student development of intercultural communicative competence (ICC). ICC refers to a combination of knowledge, skills and attitudes that focuses on effective and appropriate communication with someone from a different culture. Geoff loves to see his students develop an interest in international issues and travel, and also form friendships with international students abroad and on campus.
