Assessing Newcomers' English Language Proficiency with Humility, Compassion, and Respect

In this session, I explore the use of the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) as a tool for evaluating English language proficiency among test takers at Catholic Social Services in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I provide insights into clients' demographic profiles, CLB scores, and their aspirations for the future in Canada.
Albert Maganaka is pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Studies at McGill University in Montreal Canada where he also works as a teaching and research assistant. He completed M.Ed. in TESOL at the University of British Columbia. As a Canadian Language Benchmark assessor at Catholic Social Services in Edmonton, Alberta, he helps newcomers integrate and settle in Canada. He was a Language Instruction for Newcomer to Canada (LINC) instructor for 5 years.
